The Southern Sports Academy celebrated its 33rd year with a spectacular Presentation Night on Friday, 25 July at the Rules Club Wagga. It was a fantastic evening, seeing all our athletes dressed to their best as we celebrated their achievements, growth and resilience over the past 12 months.
The night was filled with laughter and proud moments as we celebrated the commitment of our athletes, coaches, volunteers, and supporters across the Academy programs. The night was a testament to what can be achieved with hard work, community, and belief in young people.
Each program recognised a standout athlete:
Sport Athlete of the Year Award Winners:
  • Basketball Athlete of the Year – Samantha Kerr
The Basketball program is proudly sponsored by the Rules Club Wagga Wagga
  • Cycling Athlete of the Year – Jacob McLachlan
The cycling program is proudly sponsored by Qube Agri
  • Golf Athlete of the Year – Oliver Nelson
  • Football Athlete of the Year – Jackson Myers
  • Future Stars Athlete of the Year – Sienna Toohey
  • Hockey Athlete of the Year – Tiger Newling

The Rugby program is proudly sponsored by Total Ag Solutions
The spotlight then turned to the Major Award winners, recognising excellence, leadership and commitment across the Academy:
  • Volunteer of the Year – Kylie Anderson (Rugby)
Kylie has been a constant and caring presence in the rugby program — always willing to lend a hand, offer support, and go above and beyond for all athletes, not just her own. Her selfless efforts behind the scenes have made a lasting impact on the entire squad.

  • Para Athlete of the Year – Mia Hogan (Para Swimming)
At just 13, Mia took the para swimming world by storm. From smashing national records to winning multiple gold medals and competing internationally, her achievements are astounding. Mia’s determination, humility and sportsmanship make her one to watch on the road to LA 2028.

  • Indigenous Athlete of the Year – Braxton Ivanoff (Golf)
Braxton, only 13, has already earned national respect as a rising star in junior golf. A NSW Blue Award recipient and UAA Indigenous Scholarship holder, Brax’s achievements on the course are impressive — but it’s his grounded attitude and cultural pride that make him truly exceptional.

  • Southern Sports Academy Athlete of the Year – Sienna Toohey (Swimming)
Sienna’s year was nothing short of remarkable. A member of the Australian Dolphins squad, she is now preparing to compete at the 2025 World Swimming Championships in Singapore. Her performances in the pool are elite — but it’s her discipline, humility and quiet leadership that set her apart.

  • Coaching Leadership & Excellence – James Purcell (Golf)
James transformed the SSA Golf Program from rebuilding to reigning champions, all while personally supporting athletes across the region. His commitment to accessibility, development, and excellence has helped multiple players reach new heights — and scratch handicaps.

The Academy would like to extend a huge thank you to Josh Katz, dual Olympian in judo, for joining us as keynote speaker and inspiring the next generation of athletes with his story.
Thanks also to Angus Macleod from Elders and Macleods Auctioneers for leading a brilliant fundraising auction, and to our ever-reliable MC, Luke from Triple M, for once again bringing energy and warmth to the night.
And finally, a special thank you to the Rules Club Wagga for hosting us once again and helping to make this evening such a success.
We congratulate all athletes, coaches, and supporters for making 2025 a year to remember. The future is looking bright for sport in the Southern region.
