Southern Sports Academy Cycling Squad will meet on a scheduled basis for training sessions beginning in October 2023 and progressing into 2024 to receive the most professional coaching available in the area.

The SSA program provides high-performance coaching and training opportunities to up-skill athletes and assist them in progressing to higher representation within the sport of cycling.

The SSA cycling program is endorsed by Cycling NSW as the first step in the elite athlete pathway.

The program sits between local representative cycling and higher-order representation, such as NSW state team selection.

The 2024 cycling program will run from October 2023 through 2024. Athletes will graduate from the program at the 2024 Presentation Night in July.

All this adds up to the Southern Sports Academy leading the way in terms of providing valuable development opportunities for junior athletes in the Southern NSW region.

To be eligible for the Academy Cycling Program, athletes must:

  • be competing in the U15, U17 or U19 age category in 2024
  • Athletes in the following disciplines are encouraged to apply; Road, Track, MTB (endurance and gravity)
  • must reside, attend school or tertiary education, be meaningfully employed or undertake other educational or training opportunities in the SSA Catchment Area
  • Be a current financial member of Cycling Australia
  • submit a nomination form before the closing date

The following selection criteria may be taken into consideration during the selection process:

    • Performance and results at specific events
    • Physical attributes and capabilities
    • Potential to improve
    • Competitive ability
    • Individual application
    • Coachability and behaviour

An athlete levy will apply to athletes selected into the program, and this will be advised at the time of selection.

  • Intensive training sessions by local elite coaches
  • Skill development
  • Inter-Academy Development camps
  • Injury prevention screenings and strength and conditioning training program
  • Sports science fitness testing
  • Educational seminars

A program levy will be applicable to successful athletes.  Also an athlete uniform ordered though our online clothing supplier is required for new athletes.

Athlete levies are subsidised by minimum $100 worth or raffle ticket sales by athletes.

*SSA Cycling athletes are eligible for the NSW Government Active Kids $50 voucher to contribute to the above levy.

SSA apparel is ordered separately for first time athletes.

*Scholarships are not in the form of a monetary sum but enable the athlete to participate in Academy development programs at a greatly reduced rate.
